NEIBA Announces 2020 & 2021 Hall of Fame Classes & Awards (7/7/21)
The New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) announced the names of the 2020 and 2021 Hall of Fame classes and association awards. This year’s NEIBA Hall of Fame Class includes some of the New England’s top coaches, all of which left a lasting legacy of success.

Andy Baylock Distinguished Service Award
Given to a person who has significantly contributed to the betterment of New England college baseball.
Kelly Rodman – Scout, New York Yankees

Butterfield Award
Presented to an active New England coach who exhibits the integrity and dedication to the game of college baseball that Coach Butterfield demonstrated throughout his career.
Jim Penders – University of Connecticut

Kevin Burr Assistant Coach Award
Presented to an active New England Assistant coach who exhibits the integrity and dedication to the game of college baseball that Coach Burr demonstrated throughout his career.
Bruce Ginsberg – Babson College

Hall of Fame Class of 2020

Barry Rosen – Tufts University
Barry Rosen is a veteran baseball man who has over 50 years of coaching experience. Rosen has 22 years of experience as a college head coach, 20 years as a high school head coach and nine years as a college assistant. Previously the head coach at Division II Merrimack and Saint Anselm Colleges, Rosen is a past President and Executive Board member of the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association. He was also an assistant coach at Brandeis University. A 1972 graduate of UMass Amherst, Rosen taught high school science for 35 years in Winthrop and Westford. He was head coach at Winthrop High School from 1976-92, and was named to the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Neil McPhee – Northeastern University 
The longest-tenured head coach in the history of Northeastern University, Neil McPhee coached the Huskies for 29 seasons. During that stretch, he compiled over 700 victories and had 14 players drafted by Major League teams. McPhee, a standout student-athlete at Northeastern in both baseball and ice hockey, took the helm of the NU program before the 1986 season and quickly turned the Huskies into perennial contenders. In 2013, he led Northeastern to a 31-26 record, a Beanpot title, and an appearance in the semifinal of the CAA tournament. During his tenure, NU captured five conference championships and qualified for three NCAA tournaments.

Bob DeFelice – Bentley University
For more than a half-century, since the program’s inception in 1969, Bob DeFelice has been Bentley University baseball. The 2021 season marked his 53rd at the helm of the Falcons. His teams have called Robert DeFelice Field home since the 2002 season, and on June 2, 2018, upon the culmination of his 50th year at Bentley, a statue was erected outside the Bentley Arena. In addition, the rink in the Arena now bears his name, as does the plaza outside the Arena. DeFelice’s affiliation with the university dates back to 1968, when he was hired as Bentley’s first varsity baseball coach. As Bentley’s only head baseball coach, DeFelice has won 814 games during his 52 seasons at the helm, a total that ranks third in New England Division II history. Following the retirement of Augie Garrido at Texas after the 2016 season, DeFelice is the longest-tenured active college baseball coach in the country.

Hall of Fame Class of 2021

Mike Stone – UMass Amherst
Mike Stone completed his 30^th and final season as the head baseball coach at the University of Massachusetts in 2017.  He returned to his alma mater in 1988 from the University of Vermont where he served as head coach from 1983-87. In his 30 seasons, the Minutemen compiled 697 wins, the most of any coach in program history. In addition to his teams winning Atlantic 10 Tournament titles in 1995 and 1996, Stone’s squads finished as runner-up in the Atlantic 10 in 1988, 1991, 1997, 2000 and 2003. He has also led the Minutemen to 14 appearances at the Atlantic 10 Championship in 30 seasons.

Dennis McManus – Plymouth State University
Currently serving as the Coach’s Aide at Plymouth State University, Dennis McManus led the Panthers for 31 seasons.  McManus’ experience, knowledge of the game of baseball and relationships with alumni, faculty and the local community all add to his priceless value to the baseball program. During his time as head coach McManus amassed 506 wins – the most wins by any coach in any sport in school history. In 2012 McManus led the team to an LEC Tournament runner-up finish, to go along with multiple ECAC runner-up appearances. McManus has served on numerous ECAC and NCAA tournament selection committees, as well as being the President of the NEIBA (New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association). He served on the NEIBA executive committee for 14 years.

Frank “Porky” Vieira – University of New Haven
The University of New Haven boasts one of the most storied baseball programs in the history of NCAA Division II, and a large portion of the program’s success in past, present and future can be attributed to its founder and first head coach – the legendary Frank “Porky” Vieira. Under Vieira, who founded the program in 1962 and helmed the dugout from the team’s inaugural season in 1963 through the 2006 campaign, New Haven baseball posted an all-time record of 1,127-324-6 in 44 seasons. That remarkable stretch included a string of 42 straight winning seasons from 1963 to 2004, and 43 winning campaigns overall. During Vieira’s tenure, New Haven baseball earned 35 regional postseason berths (26 NCAA, 9 NAIA) with 17 College World Series appearances (15 NCAA, 2 NAIA). UNH posted 81 NCAA postseason wins throughout his tenure – the second-most in NCAA Division II history at the time of his retirement – and advanced to the NCAA College World Series in a school-record seven consecutive seasons from 1984 to 1990. The Chargers finished as NCAA National Runners-Up in 1980 and 1989.

In 2021, NCAA Division III will revert back to strictly a regional format in order to qualify for the World Series. There will be eight 6-team regionals. In 2022, it will return to the Regionals and Super Regionals format.
