NEIBA Update (12/28/16)

 

The Executive Board met on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016 and here is some pertinent information.

1. Our annual Social at the ABCA Convention will be held Friday Evening at 9:30 on January 6, 2017. Exact room information will be forwarded just before the new year.

 

2. Our general meeting will once again be held once again in conjunction with the World Coaches Clinic at Mohegan Sun on Friday January 20th, 2017 @ 12 noon. Discounted admission to the clinic is available for assistants. Remember you do not have to attend the clinic to participate in our meeting.

 

3. Please remember to send your dues if you have not done so already!

 

4. We are pleased to announce that FRANKLIN, the number one manufacturer of batting gloves has joined us as a principle sponsor and will be offering our membership discounted pricing and direct service. We thank Chris Rodday and the folks at Franklin for their generous support of our association.

 

5. We are also pleased to announce that UNDER ARMOUR will now be a principle sponsor as well.

 

Coach Joe Walsh Memorial Golf Classic

Thur., Sept. 29, 2016
LeBaron Hills, Lakeville, Mass.

Joe Walsh was an outstanding baseball coach and an even better person. He touched so many lives through his association with Suffolk University, Harvard University, the Cape Cod Baseball League and amateur baseball throughout New England. To honor Joe’s life, a group of former players are creating a scholarship in Joe’s name at his alma mater Catholic Memorial High School. This scholarship will be given annually to a deserving student and will be funding by this annual golf tournament.

We would love to see as many of Joe’s former baseball players as well as his girls’ basketball players and track/cross country athletes join us for a great day of golf for a great man and great cause. Keeping Joe’s legacy alive through this annual scholarship! We hope to see you at the tournament, but if you cannot make it, please consider some of the other options available to contribute to the cause.

2016 NEIBA Joe Walsh All-Star Game

A Note From the Executive Committee (Tuesday, June 7, 2016)

Despite the great efforts of many, Mother Nature won again and we are unable to play the NEIBA All Star Game this year. Make-up dates are more and more tricky to work out given all of the summer ball schedules.

Although we have had rain for two straight years, we do not want to minimize this event as it celebrates our student-athletes and a great number of people who work tirelessly to make collegiate baseball in New England special. These include all of our coaches (and their families), our award winners, our loyal sponsors, and the great number of folks who simply come out and support college baseball in New England.

There are so many people to thank, but we do want to recognize a few people who work hard behind-the-scenes for NEIBA. These include, but certainly not limited to, the following:

Matt LeBranche and his All-Region, Gold Glove, and Coach-of-the-Year committees who work diligently to recognize worthy players and coaches who have put together the special seasons.

Barry Rosen for his work on the Div. II polls and the Div. II All-Region Teams.

Tristen Hobbes for pulling together Div. I and the Div. I All-Region Team.

Brendan Eygabroat and his regional representatives who handle the Div. III weekly polls.

Bob Whalen for his work on the Div. I weekly poll.

Mike Connolly who chairs our awards committee and helps select the annual award winners.

Jeremy Viens for coordinating all polls and all media for the NEIBA.

Mark Woodworth and Seth Orensky for their work on the NEIBA website.

John Casey for his leadership and hard work in literally every aspect of college baseball.

Congratulations to all on a great season! We will send out a press release recognizing our players, coaches and award winners for 2016 and look to give out the hardware at our General Meeting in January.

Division I Team of the Year: Bryant University
Division I Coach of the Year: Steve Owens, Bryant
Bryant University, which finished first in the NEIBA poll for 10 straight weeks this spring, captured its fifth consecutive Northeast Confer-ence regular-season crown and its third conference tournament championship under the direction of four-time NEC Coach of the Year Steve Owens. The Bulldogs (47-10), who are ranked 20th by Baseball America and are 22nd in the USA Today Coaches poll, have set a school record for wins in a season and enter the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the Charlottesville Regional.

Division II Team of the Year: Franklin Pierce University
Franklin Pierce University, which entered the week ranked second in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, captured its fifth consecu-tive Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division regular-season title and claimed its first NCAA East Regional championship since 2013 and seventh overall to advance to the Division II College World Series. The Ravens, who reached the NCAA Tournament for the 12th con-secutive season, finished the year at 48-9.

Division II Coach of the Year: Scott Loiseau, Southern New Hampshire University
Scott Loiseau, who was selected as the Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year for the third time in the last five seasons, led Southern New Hampshire University to a conference tournament championship and a school record 50 wins this spring. The Penmen also made their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and won five straight elimination games to reach the East Regional title game.

Division III Team of the Year: Tufts University
Tufts University, which finished the year at 35-8, captured its third NESCAC Tournament championship since 2010 and fourth overall, while making its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history this spring. The Jumbos set a school record for wins in a season and reached the New England Regional final for the first time since 2010 and the second time overall.

Division III Coach of the Year: Eric Podbelski, Wheaton College
Eric Podbelski was selected as the NEIBA Division III Coach of the Year for the sixth time after leading Wheaton College to its 14th NEW-MAC Tournament championship and the top seed in the NCAA Division III New England Regional last month. The Lyons finished the 2016 campaign at 31-13, marking the 12th time that Podbelski has led the program to 30 or more victories since 2001.

Jack Butterfield Award: Bob Smith, Middlebury College
Presented to an active or former New England coach who exhibits the integrity and dedication to the game of college baseball that coach Butterfield demonstrated throughout his career. Following 38 years at Middlebury College, including 32 as head baseball coach, Bob Smith retired following the conclusion of the 2016 campaign last month. The winningest coach in school history, Smith amassed more than 350 victories and led the Panthers to their first 20-win season and first postseason berth after earning a spot in the ECAC Tournament in 1999. He collected his second NESCAC Coach of the Year honor after guiding Middlebury to its first conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2006, while leading the program to a school-record 26 wins. Smith also served as an assistant football coach from 1979-94 and head track & field coach from 1980-94.

Kevin Burr Assistant Coach Award: Pete Pasquarosa, Wheaton College
Presented to an active New England assistant coach who exhibits the integrity and dedication to the game of college baseball that coach Burr demonstrated throughout his career.
A coaching veteran with nearly three decades of experience, Wheaton College assistant Pete Pasquarosa has been an integral part of the Lyons’ success over the last seven years. Since joining the coaching staff prior to the 2010 season, Wheaton has won six regular-season NEWMAC titles, five conference tournament championships and five trips to the Division III NCAA Tournament, including a second-place finish at the 2012 College World Series. Additionally, Pasquarosa has served as an assistant coach in the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) since 1991 and will begin his 13th season with the Harwich Mariners later this month.

Andy Baylock Distinguished Service Award: Judy Walden Scarafile, Cape Cod Baseball League
Given to a person who has significantly contributed to the betterment of New England College Baseball. One of the most influential women in baseball, Judy Walden Scarafile served as president of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) for 24 years and retired following 45 years of service to the league in October. A former USA Baseball “Woman of the Year” Award winner, she became the first woman inducted into the Cape League Hall of Fame in 2003. After joining the CCBL as an official scorer in 1970, Scarafile served the league in various capacities before becoming the first female president in 1991. She is also featured in the “Women in Baseball” exhibit at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

NEIBA has begun naming Players and Pitchers of the Week in each division, starting in March of 2016. Please check the PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK link above.

Peter Frates Strike out ALS Wristbands

A message from Mike Gambino, Boston College:

“We are hoping to make Pete Frates’ cause of striking out ALS the cause of baseball and we are hoping this movement starts in New England. Pete is a New England kid through and through and we are first and foremost a New England program. Having this national movement start with our group would be awesome.

“The goal would be to have it start in New England the second to last weekend in April and have it finish the second to last weekend in May with all the ACC schools wearing the wristbands for the final series. MLB and the ABCA have already said they are on board.

“You can purchase the wristbands off Petefrates.com or just send the file you received via email to any embroider you use and they can make them up. You probably won’t have the program needed open the file on your computer but companies that do embroidering will.

“I thank you all for everything you have already done for Pete and this mission as well as for helping to launch this next initiative. Greg DiCenzo  and Matt Noone are also playing  a big role in helping to launch this so I want to thank them as well.”

NEIBA Updates (Updated 2-1-16)

• Mike Connolly (Bowdoin College) is currently soliciting nominations for the 2016 NEIBA Awards.
• John Susi (Western Conn. St.) is currently accepting nominations for the inaugural NEIBA Hall of Fame Class. The deadline for nominations if Feb. 5, 2016.
• A number of schools still have unpaid dues. Please note that schools are not eligible for polls, all-star games, and NIEBA awards if the annual membership is not renewed.

• The annual meeting of the membership was very well attended, and the association’s annual business was conducted under the direction of NEIBA President Ken Harring (UMass Lowell) and Secretary Matt Noone (Babson College).

• The 2015 NEIBA Awards were presented at the meeting and all three winners were in attendance and recognized in front of the group. Congratulations!
